Speaking with Central Catholic Coach Mike Glines the last couple days, he seems like my kind of guy. I interrupted him while he was driving to an interview with the Modesto Bee late Tuesday morning, while having a beer after practice Tuesday night and while he was shopping for Gatorade, I think that’s what he said, on Wednesday morning.

He was probably wondering why the heck I didn’t show up at Home Depot Center on Monday, when the CIF whisked him into town for an exchange of game tapes, which was disguised as a press conference, but I volunteer in my son’s kindergarten class on Monday mornings and somebody had to cut out those gingerbread men.

Each time I bothered Glines, however, he was as gracious as the first. Probably because he’s retiring after the Division III state bowl game Saturday against St. Bonaventure and he won’t have to deal with guys like me again.

He said the last time he coached a game down here was in 1980, when he was at Modesto Junior College and his team beat Pasadena City College at the Rose Bowl to win the mythical national championship.

Anyway, I found this great picture of him (second photo from the top). He looks like the kind of guy who enjoys life.
