Many teams are beginning tournament play today, and for some of those that had to travel, get-away day turned out to be quite adventurous.

‘We’re on a late bus to the airport right now,’ said Long Beach Poly Coach Carl Buggs. ‘We’re sweating bullets.’

Poly reached the airport on time, but It didn’t matter. The team’s airline tickets were left behind at school. The Jackrabbits caught a later flight to Phoenix.

In the interim, though, a series of phone calls began circulating among players, and the news was far more serious than just a missed flight. The rumor that was that Chatsworth -- heading to the same girl’s basketball tournament but in a van -- had flipped off the road on Interstate 10 while driving in the rain, according to Buggs.

It turned out to be just that, a rumor. Apparently the van that Chatsworth occupied was in the logjam behind the accident. Whew!

Any more travel horror stories out there?
