Anja Wilson felt demoralized but hid it. Felt defeated yet never showed it. Felt beaten but stuffed it back inside. ‘Yeah, I couldn’t let my kids see that stuff,’ he said. ‘I just kept my head up.’

Last year, Wilson, in his first season coaching the Lynwood boys’ basketball, lost and lost and lost some more, finishing with a 2-23 record and 0-10 in league.

Now, it’s different. Totally different. The Knights are 9-1 -- their only loss on opening night to the No. 16-ranked Loyola Cubs. ‘I’m going to be honest with you,’ Wilson said. ‘It’s taken me by surprise.’

A reason for the rise is the emergence of D’Angelo Scott, who leads the team with 21.6 points and 8.4 rebounds, along with Allen Iv Jiles (15.7 points) and Michael Black (12.2). ‘I got a group of kids who love playing and want to be out there,’ Wilson said.

And it’s showing.

Lynwood plays Monrovia on Dec. 26 at 7 p.m.
