It’s official. The Murrieta Valley boys’ basketball team is off to its best start in school history. The Nighthawks knocked off Corona Roosevelt, 62-57, on Saturday night to win its own tournament.

Whoever designed the brackets and hired the refs deserves a raise, or at least a pat on the back.

Murrieta Valley (11-0) moves on to the Paloma Valley tournament in Menifee (79 miles from downtown Los Angeles), where the Nighthawks will open Wednesday at 6 p.m. against San Jacinto, which happens to be coached by Pete Murrieta (no relation).

That game should provide a decent little matchup of juniors. Bryce Lenhart of Murrieta Valley scored 17 points against Roosevelt and was named tournament most valuable player. Chris Harriel of San Jacinto is also an athletic wing who averages close to 20 points.
