The late Larry Doyle was a terrific guy (and athletic director) at Marina, and he would have enjoyed what transpired Thursday at the Larry Doyle Orange County Championships.

Upsets galore.

Among the four quarterfinal games at Edison High, three went in favor of the underdog: Norco defeated No. 16 Troy, 52-40; No. 22 Foothill defeated No. 3 San Clemente, 42-38; and Edison defeated No. 6 Santa Margarita, 48-46.

When the tournament resumes today at Marina, the semifinals will feature Foothill (11-1) vs. Edison at 6:30 p.m., and Norco (11-1) vs. No. 12 Mira Costa (9-2).

It’s the best win of the season for Edison, which has been bolstered by the arrival of junior guard Priscila Cergol, a transfer from Lynwood. Cergol scored 15 points and had the assist to Victoria Lockhorst for her game-winning, buzzer-beating layup, according to Carlos Arias’ account.

It was an absolutely fantastic victory for Foothill, which got 21 points from Christina Marinacci. It’s the biggest win that program has had in several years.

The fifth-place bracket would make a great tournament on its own: San Clemente vs. Santa Margarita, and Troy vs. No. 21 Esperanza.

Before compact disks, music came on records, and instead of a single iTune download, there were small 45 rpm (revolutions per minute) records. The photo is 1957 Elvis Presley 45 called ‘All Shook Up,’ which describes this tournament; on the flip side was ‘That’s When Your Heartaches Begin,’ which seems apropos for the losers.
