When Taft and Dominguez first played on Dec. 7, Taft won, 70-54, in only the only third game of the season for both teams.

On Saturday, the Toreadors and Dons meet again in the To The Rack Showcase, a one-day tournament at Pepperdine University. This game, one of five on the day, should be a better indicator of where these teams are now and where they could be headed.

Taft Coach Derrick Taylor has confidence to spare in his 8-3 team. But he was impressed by 10-1 Dominguez winning the National Division championship of the recent MaxPreps Holiday Classic tournament at Torrey Pines High in San Diego.

‘They are the hottest team in Southern California right now, playing better than anybody,’ Taylor said of the Dons. ‘They’re a totally different team from a month ago. It should be a highly competitive game.’

Malibu and West Adams Prep get the tournament underway at 2:30 p.m. That game will be followed by Sylmar vs. Oakland Skyline; Compton vs. Inglewood; Compton Centennial vs. Fremont, and, finally, Taft vs. Dominguez.
