The Birmingham girls’ soccer team plays its West Valley League opener against Granada Hills on Wednesday, and the Patriots (8-1-1) are thinking big this season.

They want to end El Camino Real’s seven-year run as City champion.

Coach Ed Verdugo, in his second season at Birmingham, believes he has the team to challenge ECR -- not only in league play but also in the playoffs.

‘Last year, we won 10 games playing many underclassmen,’ he said. ‘This year, they have experience. I feel we’re stronger defensively, have a good mix in scoring and we’ve been getting good goalkeeping from Charleye Schneiderman.

‘Don’t get me wrong, El Camino is the team to beat. But we’re ready to compete with them.’
