Among the standouts:

-- Scott Chene, Irvine: The upper-weight MVP pinned all four of his opponents, including two in the first period, to claim the 130-pound title and lower-weight MVP honors at the Estancia New Year Classic. He was one of four individual winners (the others were Max Phelan at 125, Kyle Chene at 135 and Robin Pietchmann at 145) for the team champion Vaqueros.

-- Rene Ortiz, Magnolia: Was named ‘Champ of Champs’ at the Beresford Invitational at Rim of the World after pinning Primo Julian of San Diego Mount Carmel in 3:01 in the 130-pound finals. Ortiz, who claimed titles at the Brea Olinda Invitational and Mann Classic earlier this season, also won by decision and technical fall at Beresford.
