Great student, great guard ... and great afro

Just spoke to Long Beach Wilson guard Michael Wilder and dug up three critical tidbits about him:

1. The student: Wilder, a junior, has a 3.8 grade-point average, digs pre-calculus and has nabbed the recruiting curiosities from two of the academic elite -- the Ivy League’s Penn and Brown. Long Beach State and UC Davis are also wooing Wilder.

2. The guard: Wilder averages 15 points and 10 rebounds a game and can toss up a double-double in any game -- he’s done it eight times this season. He’s also one of the linchpins for the Bruins (12-5), who have won nine of 10 games.

3. The afro: One word, huge. Another word, colossal. He’s been growing the ‘fro for four years and says he has no plans to snip it or shave it. The ‘fro is more than just cool -- it’s his mojo, perhaps.

Now my advice to you -- check out Wilder when the Bruins head to Lakewood on Monday at 6:30.
