His voice was raspy. And raw. And oh-so jubilant, sounding, as if he might burst into peals of joyous laughter. And why shouldn’t he? His squad just knocked off the baddest -- and that’s bad as in good -- team in the Bay League and maybe in the entire Southland. ‘It’s a wonderful feeling,’ Mira Costa girls’ basketball Coach Don Braunecker rasped. ‘Wonderful.’

No. 20-ranked Mira Costa shocked No. 3 Redondo (14-2, 2-1) in an intoxicating 53-48 victory tonight -- well, intoxicating for Braunecker and the Mustangs. ‘Sure, I was a little stunned,’ he said. ‘Redondo is a great team.’

Mira Costa (14-3, 3-0) trailed by five at halftime, tied the game at the end of third quarter, then took over in the fourth. Megan Richardson had 14 points and seven assists and Mikah Maly-Karros added 14 points and 21 rebounds for the Mustangs, who outrebounded the Sea Hawks, 37-22.

‘This is just a great win,’ Braunecker said.

And a tough loss for Redondo.
