Don’t think I’m crazy, but I really thought the Morro Bay girls’ hoopsters would make things interesting in their Los Padres League showdown with St. Joseph on Wednesday night. Of course, I can’t say I was surprised when I read the Knights obliterated the Pirates, 46-27.

Hey, I’m aware of what St. Joseph has accomplished this season. Ane McPike is a swooshing star despite her sophomore status and the Reizebos sisters form one of the most dangerous bloodlines in the state. Couple that with this trio’s awesome defensive capabilities and it’s no wonder this team is a contender for the Division II-A title.

Still, even though it came up short in this one, Morro Bay could be the best team in San Luis Obispo County -- come on all you Arroyo Grande and Mission Prep fans, I know you’re out there. Leading scorer Natellie Saia is averaging more than 13 ppg and Jasmine Jakobsen and Caroline Nash also add a nice chunk to the talent department.

So even though they’re still longshots, don’t be surprised if the Pirates make things interesting when the rivals meet again Feb. 6. Morro Bay will be playing on its home hardwood in that one and who knows what could happen.
