They have experience. They have talent. But they also have something else -- camaraderie. Yeah, friendships.

Mira Costa boys’ soccer is overflowing with seniors -- 16 of them -- and that’s the reason why the squad is so tight. ‘They’ve just grown up playing soccer with each other,’ said Coach Gary Smith.

Smith said that’s also the reason the team is so good. ‘It’s obvious that they play with a sense of urgency,’ he said. ‘I have 16 players who know that this is their last year together.’

Mira Costa, ranked No. 6 in Division II, has two four-year varsity players: defender Kincaid Wilson and midfielder Keifer Greenlief. ‘This is the strongest team I’ve had with these two guys,’ Smith said.

Smith said the team’s so strong that one goal is possible: to capture the crown in the ferocious Bay League. ‘Realistically, we can win league,’ he said.

Friday, the Mustangs (12-4-3, 2-1) host Peninsula (8-5-1, 2-1) for sole possession of second place in league. Currently, in first place is West Torrance (10-2-3, 2-0-0).
