The Knight boys’ basketball team had to be considered one of the favorites to win the Golden League title this season after winning the championship last year. However, two losses in the first four league games earlier in the month raised some serious questions about whether this group was capable of repeating.

Well, it appears as if we have an answer. And it’s yes, due in large part to Paul George. The senior scored 26 points Tuesday as the Hawks rallied from a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat Highland, 60-54, in a game that kept their hopes alive in the league race. Yes, a first-place finish is still a possibility for the defending champions.

‘Let me tell you something, we needed this one,’’ Coach Tom Hegre said via cell phone after the game. ‘We were kind of thinking that some of our opponents might be leaving us for dead. That inspired us. We have that competitive fire again and its a carry-over effect from last year.’’

Lancaster sits atop the standings, two games ahead of Knight and Highland with seven left in the regular season. My colleague, Austin Knoblauch, set up a poll yesterday allowing you to vote for who you think will be the Golden League champion, and I’m glad I gave the nod to the Hawks when I did because there’s going to be plenty of people on their bandwagon now.
