The Southland is home to some of the top point guards in the nation, most notably Jrue Holiday and Jerime Anderson, both ranked among the top 10 in the country by recruiting services such as Rivals.com and Scout.com. The conversation, however, would not be complete without mentioning Larry Drew.

The senior from Taft proved he’s among the elite floor generals once again Wednesday. In three quarters of play, Drew scored 12 points and added 19 assists, one short of tying the school record, before heading to the bench for good in the fourth in a 90-44 victory over visiting Chatsworth. Not bad for 24 minutes of work. Not bad at all.

“I had no idea how many assists I had until someone told me I was up to 13 at halftime. We always talk about getting buckets and we were getting buckets last night,’ Drew said before practice Thursday. “You know Terran Carter, right? He was joking around with me afterward and said something funny, like, ‘You don’t drop dimes, you drop quarters.’ We laughed about that one for a while.’

Guess that settles that. Won’t get any arguments from me. Next up: a West Valley League game on Friday against El Camino Real. Keep in mind, Drew had 14 assists in the first meeting with the Conquistadores in early January. So the record -- held by Dedan Thomas (1988), not Toreador legend Jordan Farmar -- could be within grasp this time around.
