Tonight, I witnessed the Mira Costa girls’ basketball clinic.

It goes like this...

Let the powerful post players bully in and out of the paint like big rigs. Let the sharp-shooters zip the rock around on a veritable rubberband. And wait for a lane to open as wide as Wilshire Boulevard.

It’s simple. It’s smart. And it’s how the Mustangs won by 20 points over the host Leuzinger Olympians, 56-36, in a Bay League showdown. Mikah Maly-Karros had 23 points and 15 rebounds and Megan Richardson had 13 points for Mira Costa (18-3, 6-0).

The Mustangs next clinic is Jan. 29 against West Torrance.

Hold up for this aside: In case you didn’t notice, No. 8-ranked Mira Costa has passed rival par excellence, Redondo, in The Times’ rankings. The Sea Hawks, who lost to the Mustangs 10 days ago, dropped from No. 3 to No. 9. The teams face each other again on Jan. 31.
