The Grant Lancers were cruising toward the Sunset Six League title until they stumbled on the road against Sun Valley Poly, 61-53, on Jan. 25.

Both teams enter the final week of the season tied for first in league. They split their two-game season series.

Grant (18-5, 7-1) has the slightly easier finish, playing road games at Verdugo Hills (3-8, 2-6) and Canoga Park (5-16, 0-8). Poly (13-6, 7-1), which has won seven straight, plays at home against Canoga Park and Van Nuys (7-7, 4-4). Van Nuys is tied for third in league with North Hollywood.

Grant Coach Michael Flot bemoans the fact his team is not in total control of its destiny. At the same time, he hopes the loss to Poly has gotten his team’s attention at the right time -- just before the playoffs begin.

‘We were on a winning streak [eight straight] and we were getting cocky,’ Flot said. ‘Sometimes a loss will do you good. This brought our team back to being level-headed.’
