I have the greatest respect for the girls’ basketball program at Rosary. That’s one reason I point out that the Royals are 12-14 this season and 0-8 in the Trinity League.

Why tell you this?

Because this was a rebuilding season for Rosary, and because they are an example of never giving up. In a tough league with three Times’ top 25 teams, Rosary hung tough right through to the season finale.

On Tuesday night it was beaten by No. 16 Mater Dei, 62-55, in overtime.

It was beaten last week by No. 23 JSerra, 56-50.

It was beaten in the first round of league play by Orange Lutheran (which had a victory over Mater Dei), 46-44.

It lost 11 of its final 13 games, five of them by seven points or less.

Coach Richard Yoon’s teams, when things were going good, were never outworked on the court. It’s good to see that when the talent isn’t quite what it was when he had Maggie Barnett, Jen Farner, Karina Figueroa or sisters Teresa and Jenise Karcher, that the Royals’ spirit remains the same.
