Elizabeth Coach David Galley isn’t the only one dissatisfied with the boys’ basketball City Invitational bracket. Belmont Coach Patrick Mariano also expressed unhappiness with some of the decisions made by the selection committee.

‘I am very upset that a El Camino Real team is in the playoffs with a winless league,’ Mariano told me in an e-mail. ‘How can a team be rewarded with a playoff berth after winning ZERO league games? I understand playing in a tough league, but it doesn’t mean anything if you don’t win any games.’

Mariano wasn’t finished: ‘I am upset that Belmont, tied for second in Northern League, did not get in over El Camino and Huntington Park. It seems every year the playoffs are seeded on perception and historical performances instead of a year-by-year basis.’

So far no one has complained about the City championship bracket -- at least not to me.
