Can Santa Margarita slow down vapor-trail Compton?

The fastest animal is a cheetah, pinning the needle at 70 miles per hour. The fastest auto is the SSC Ultimate Aero TT, maxing out at 257 mph. And the fastest plane on record: the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, which revved up to 2,200.

On my brain is speed. And why? I’m thinking about what Compton boys’ basketball Coach Tony Thomas told me last night when chatting about his Southern Section Division I-AA quarterfinals showdown Friday night with Santa Margarita. ‘They’re going to try to slow it down,’ he said. ‘But we’re going to keep the tempo fast.’

See, in terms of hardwood quickness, Compton is Mach 3 -- yes, it’s vapor-trail fast. Guys like DeMar DeRozan, Kyrie Armstrong and Lorenzo McCloud can blaze the ball all over the hardwood. So, like Thomas said, the only question now: Can the Eagles slow down the Tarbabes?
