The most famous American duel was the Burr-Hamilton shootout of 1804. I believe Vegas favored the younger, quicker Aaron Burr, but I digress. More on those pistol-packing chaps later.

First, I’d like to chat about another classic duel -- one which went down Wednesday between Long Beach Wilson and El Toro in the second round of the Southern Section Division I girls’ soccer playoffs.

There was no scoring for 100 minutes, then it was time for the shootout. The two squads fired in goal after goal to make it 3-3.

That’s when Kellie Culbertson blasted in a shot, giving Wilson a one-goal lead. El Toro could not respond -- fatally wounded, you could say, much as Alexander Hamilton was. (Now, watch this segue!)

Yes, Hamilton, the former secretary of the Treasury Department, took a fatal shot from Burr, the sitting vice president. So, what prompted the Burr-Hamilton showdown? I bet it was over some super-pretty girl -- uh, I really don’t know. I’m only a sports writer. Click here to get their blow-by-blow account.
