Fairfax had such a great 2006-07 season, winning the City and state boys’ basketball titles, it would have been understandable if the Lions were unable to climb that mountain again.

But Fairfax is back in the City Championship Division game, in part, because the Lions have been anything but fat cats this season. The hunger to repeat was as important as having the talent to repeat.

‘Last year was last year,’ said Fairfax Coach Harvey Kitani as the Lions prepare to play Taft on Saturday for the championship. ‘And I think our guys focused on the fact that this was a new team, and they had to continue to work and improve.

‘The main thing is to keep getting better. I’m most proud of their resiliency to keep fighting to improve. From the first practice to this week, we all felt and said we can still get better.’
