I’m a little bummed to find out Division VI powerhouse Desert Christian has decided it won’t play in next week’s Southern California regional tournament.

It turns out, according to Erik Boal at the Daily News, Desert Christian Coach Deann Lewis and her husband/assistant coach, Curtis, made vacation plans for next week before realizing the Knights had a very good chance of making the newly initiated tournament. So, the team came to the consensus that Saturday’s Division VI championship game against second-seeded Calvary Murrieta would be its final game since it didn’t want to play in the regionals without its coaches.

I respect the players’ decision to focus on the divisional title, but it’s disappointing we won’t get the chance to see them go head to head with some of the state’s best teams. I know the DC players aren’t talking about it much now, but if they take the Division VI title, I’m sure they’re going to be wrestling with those ‘what if’ thoughts for awhile.

The good news is Viewpoint and St. Margaret’s now have a shot a making the regional, which begins on Tuesday. Also, be sure to check back here on Sunday afternoon when the regional selections are announced.
