Birmingham High senior left-hander Edgar Olmos began the season Friday with a 12-strikeout performance against Burbank in leading the Patriots to a 1-0 victory.

Olmos, who has signed with Arizona, walked three and allowed only two hits.

Olmos can become an important figure in City Section baseball. Although his team is not considered one of the favorites to reach Dodger Stadium, every time Olmos takes the mound, the Patriots have a chance to win, and if Birmingham qualifies for the City Championship Division, they figure to be tough to beat in a playoff game with Olmos pitching.
