Twenty-four. Six. And Six.

That was Taft guard Larry Drew Jr.’s line of points, rebounds and assists in the Toreadors’ 65-55 win over Fairfax in the City Section Championship Division title game Saturday. And it doesn’t begin to tell how brilliant Drew was.

He drove through the Lions defense at will, getting a shot anytime he wanted. He kept Taft under control whenever Fairfax tried to make a run.

He made the Lions look helpless to stop him, something Drew has done to just about every team he has played against.

You have to wonder: C an he possibly get any better in college and, hopefully, the pros. Can he still have upside?

‘Oh yes,’ Taft Coach Derrick Taylor said. ‘He’s going to get bigger and stronger. He’s starting to mature. He’s already at another level of quick. But now he’s stronger; he can take a hit and still finish.

‘I don’t think there is anybody quite like him in California. I think he is the most dynamic player in the state. He controls tempo, he controls us. He knows when to run and when to go slow. No one can rattle him or speed him up.’
