After being the butt of many jokes by friends and classmates for being co-champions the last two years, Santa Margarita won’t have to share the title this year.

The ‘Super’ Eagles beat Newbury Park, 1-0, in a game that was nowhere near as close as the score would indicate during the Southern Section Division I finals Saturday at Warren High. Cal-bound forward Mike Munoz scored the game-winner in the 57th minute on a corner kick from junior Austin McAnena.

While there is nothing wrong with being co-champions, LMU-bound defender Roger Downes said he was tired of having to share the title.

‘If we tied today it would have been a letdown. If we lost the last two years would have been meaningless,’ Downes said. ‘This was our final year and we wanted to make everyone proud. As seniors, this is our leaving note.’

What a way to go out. The Eagles dominated Newbury Park from beginning to end.
