I know it’s way to early to start making predictions, but when it comes to Foothill League tennis it’s hard not to like defending champion Valencia.

The Vikings have looked strong in three nonleague victories so far, particularly singles players Jack Zapala, Tyler Gottshall and Jimmy Kim. After opening with a 13-5 victory over Sherman Oaks Notre Dame on Tuesday, Valencia traveled to Ventura and Santa Barbara counties for road wins at Oxnard on Wednesday and San Marcos on Friday, both by 12-6 margins.

Saugus, West Ranch and Hart could step up to give the Vikings a run for their money but Coach Annie Kellogg‘s team is comfortable being the favorite. Last spring, the Vikings lost in the Division II quarterfinals to San Marino, the top-seeded team and eventual champion.

Will Valencia progress further this season? Maybe. Priority No. 1, however, is another Foothill League title. The Vikings travel to Torrance Saturday for the first round of the First Serve Tournament.
