It’s not every day that a sophomore guard gets to test his skills against a McDonald’s All-American. But Derek Brown from Chino Hills got to face Taft’s Larry Drew Jr. Monday night in the Southern California Regionals and was able to do some damage, scoring 20 points in a 78-52 loss.

Drew has known Brown since their AAU days and came away impressed.

‘I’m not going to lie,’ Drew said. ‘He surprised me. He’s gotten a lot better. That’s my friend. He’s always been good and every time I’ve seen him he’s gotten better.’

Brown was a first-team All-Sierra League selection, and his experience against Drew should help him next season.
