When DeAndre Daniels moved from Louisiana to California back in September, he had no idea where he’d end up playing basketball. The 15-year-old made his rounds through the Valley with family, checking out several high schools before finally deciding to enroll at Renaissance Academy. In retrospect, it was the right choice, considering the success he’s had this season.

The 6-foot-8 sophomore has fit in well, playing a prominent role off the bench for the Wildcats, averaging 10 points and six rebounds heading into tonight’s/Thursday’s showdown against Reedley Immanuel in the semifinals of the Southern California Regional Division V playoffs. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Maranatha High.

‘I remember DeAndre and his father coming to our gym and watching a couple of practices. I had no idea who they were,’’ Wildcats Coach Sid Cooke said. ‘You know what, I’m sure glad they ended up here. We lucked out with this kid. He’s got a ton of raw talent. I don’t think he realizes just how good he is or how good he can be.’’

Apparently, NCAA Division I scouts haven seen something they like in Daniels, too. He’s been contacted by several programs, including Arizona St., Gonzaga and Washington. A college decision, however, will have to wait. The only thing on his mind right now is the next game, and perhaps an appearance in the state finals March 15 at Arco Arena.

Guess joining the Wildcats six months ago turned out to be a good decision.
