How many times did Fairfax hear the mantra every team hears during the course of a season?

Make your free throws.

The Lions didn’t do that on Thursday, and that is why their 2007-08 season is over.

The visiting Lions had controlled their Southern California Regionals Division I semifinal game against host Dominguez much of the night.Third-seeded Fairfax led by 14 points in the second quarter, and by 15 points in the third quarter. It also had an eight-point lead with less than three minutes to play in the fourth quarter.

But the Lions couldn’t make free throws. The biggest transgression came in the fourth quarter, when they missed nine of 14 freebies. Second-seeded Dominguez tied the score at 58 with four seconds left in regulation; survived the first overtime 71-71, and managed to win in double overtime, 80-77.

I’m sure the Dons were who the Lions thought they were. And the Lions let ‘em off the hook.
