Santa Margarita’s California-bound forward Mike Munoz set a school record for most career goals last night.

It happened during the first half of the Eagles’ 4-1 victory over Canoga Park in the Southern California Regional playoffs. Munoz, picture, scored his 47th, 48th and 49th goals to break Seth George’s mark of 48.

George, who went on to play in Major League Soccer for the L.A. Galaxy, had set the record back in 1995. George was one of three players from the Eagles’ first Southern Section championship team in 1993 that made it to MLS. The others were Josh Keller, who played with the now defunct Tampa Bay Mutiny, and goalkeeper Matt Reis, who’s regarded as one of MLS’ best goalkeeper and still a starter with the New England Revolution.

This year’s Eagles could send players to the MLS as well.

There are four players on Santa Margarita’s roster that have ‘pro-potential.’ Munoz is one of them, Loyola Marymount-bound defender Roger Downes, junior midfielder Austin McAnena and junior goalkeeper Billy Thompson are the others.

Next up for the ‘Super’ Eagles is a meeting with San Diego Cathedral in the Division II championship game Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Warren High.
