The Mater Dei boys’ basketball team is playing as if it has already made travel plans to Sacramento.

Blake Arnet stole an in-bounds pass with just under two seconds remaining in the opening quarter and then banked in a half-court shot to give the Monarchs a 20-11 lead over Fresno Edison in the Southern California Regional Division II final at the Sports Arena.

The Monarchs jumped to a 14-2 lead in the first six minutes. Travis Wear and Gary Franklin knocked down three-point baskets, Wear put back Andy Brown’s miss and David Wear had two inside baskets. From now on, I think I’ll just refer to them as Wear 1 and Wear 2.

Josh Maroney gave Edison some hope with consecutive three-point baskets, but Arnet’s buzzer beater was definitely a deflater.
