Baseball scouts drool over big-bodied pitchers. Certain prototypes are beefy, like Dodgers Brad Penny and Jonathan Broxton (pictured). And there’s a colossal hurler at Torrance -- 6-foot-6, 240-pound Jason Wheeler, the sturdy pillar of the Tartars’ pitching staff.

Wheeler went 6-2 last year with a 1.89 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 62 2/3 innings. This year, he’s 1-0 with 13 Ks in eight innings as Torrance is off to a 4-1 start. Oh, and he’s already launched two home runs.

Wheeler has signed to play baseball at Loyola Marymount, where his brother, Ryan, a former Torrance standout, already is playing for the Lions.

By the way, I just looked up Broxton’s height and weight -- 6-foot-4 and 290 pounds!
