The Division IV girls’ state basketball championship game between La Jolla Country Day and Vallejo St. Patrick/St. Vincent is underway ... barely.

Country Day’s flight out of San Diego was canceled this morning because the maintenance crew has apparently been playing Gin Rummy instead of changing the oil. The Torreys were scheduled to fly on one of those canceled flights.

Turns out, the team and coaches were able to get on a later flight, but a handful of supporters and administrators had to wait for an even later departure. They arrived about 30 seconds into the game. I wonder if they even stuck around the airport to retrieve their luggage.

As far as the game, the senior trio of Dominique Conners, Chelsea Burns and Janae Fulcher got off to a hot start for Country Day, scoring four points each to help the Torreys to a 12-5 lead. However, the Bruins have battled back and trail, 16-14, heading into the second quarter.

St. Patrick/St. Vincent has a talented senior of its own in Alex Cowling, who is averaging close to 22 points. She scored three in the opening quarter.
