San Luis Obispo put a maraschino cherry on top of its fast start by hammering visiting Santa Ynez, 26-5, on Thursday afternoon. It was the Tigers’ final game before playing in the San Luis Obispo tournament on the other side of spring break in two weeks, but don’t look for the Tigers to SLO down (get it...I know, it’s corny) anytime soon.

What’s been the secret behind the Tigers’ 4-0 start?

Well, let’s see -- they’re averaging more than 15 runs a game and they have five players batting over .600. Darren Mullen is batting a team-best .778 with seven hits and 13 RBIs and teammate Matt Jacobs is batting .667. In addition, Dan Howell, son of former Major Leaguer Roy Howell, drove in eight runs on Thursday and is hitting .615.

Still, as good as the Tigers are, I’m not sure how things will pan out in the Pac-7 League. Nipomo and Paso Robles are off to solid starts and SLO’s pitching may need a little tweaking before this team can blow the doors off some of the best teams in the county.

Stay tuned...
