They might be located a few hundred miles apart, but Mira Costa and San Jose Mitty have started quite a rivalry in high school girls’ athletics.

The Mustangs defeated Mitty in back-to-back Division II state volleyball championships in 2005 and 2006. Now, they’re locked up in the Division II state basketball championships.

Mira Costa leads, 12-7, after the first quarter at Arco Arena in Sacramento, but there’s still a long way to go. Just ask Brea Olinda players, who built a nice first-half lead against Mitty in last season’s title game, only to have the referees call 12 fouls on the LadyCats and none on Mitty, opening the door for Mitty to win, 54-49.
