He is a man whom I have never met. But, after what I read, I could see the glint in his eyes, hear the quip on his lips and feel the scars on his heart.

Dwight Nathaniel will coach his final game, leading Oakland McClymonds against Dominguez for the Division I state title at the Arco Arena on Saturday at 8 p.m.

And, for Nathaniel, it will be just a game.

His wife died in a 2003 auto accident in which he was the driver. In September, his daughter and granddaughter were killed when a train struck their car. Authorities ruled his daughter’s death a suicide and his granddaughter’s death a homicide.

Nathaniel will leave basketball to spend more time with his family.
