The inconsistent officiating during the state basketball tournament could soon produce changes in the selection process, which relies on all-star crews.

‘There is a concern, even with the assigners and observers, that the cohesiveness and teamwork among the officials is missing when they walk out there for the first time,’ said Roger Blake, associate executive director of the CIF who’s in charge of officiating.

Instead of putting together three-person crews who have never worked together before, there could be support to return to crews from specific associations. Blake said he will call a meeting with the officials’ associations to come up with a solution.

‘These are all great officials,’ Blake said. ‘These are the best of the best. It’s just not clicking.’
