Looks as if the third time won’t be a charm for the Berkeley girls’ basketball team.

Seeking its third straight Division I state title, all against Berkeley, Long Beach Poly thoroughly dusted up off the Yellow Jackets in the second quarter, outscoring them, 21-8, to build a 35-17 halftime lead at Arco Arena in Sacramento.

The Jackrabbits have one of the best players in the nation in senior Jasmine Dixon, who is headed to Rutgers, but they’ve also been getting contributions from others. Sophomore point guard April Cook has a team-high 10 points, while Dixon and reserve center Thaddesia Southall each have six, and freshman guard Ariya Cook-Williams and junior guard Kelli Thompson each have five.

If the second quarter wasn’t tough enough for Berkeley, standout guard Jazmine Perkins also picked up her third foul with 4:39 left in the half. Perkins, who signed with Washington State, scored 28 points in the Northern California Regional final last week against Sacramento Kennedy, but only has one point tonight.

The referees are doing a fantastic job!
