The San Luis Obispo Mission Prep girls’ basketball team is 0-5 in state championship games, the worst record of any team, boys or girls, at this event.

If the first quarter of the girls’ Division V state final this morning at Arco Arena in Sacramento is any indication, the Royals will remain at the top of at least one category.

Ross Branson jumped to a 16-8 lead after the opening quarter, scoring eight of the game’s first 10 points and then getting a three-pointer from Michela Bestwick to extend the advantage to 13-6.

Branson, meanwhile, is trying to keep its record perfect at the state finals and win its second title.

By the way, the referees must have read my blog last night or that of my colleague, Eric Sondheimer, this morning because they’ve been on their best behavior ... so far.
