Something belies their near-flawless record.

“We’re just not playing with smoothness,” said Mira Costa boys’ volleyball Coach Mike Cook. “Just not playing with a lot of chemistry.”

Cook should know chemistry -– he’s been coaching the Mustangs for the last 28 seasons and has won a measly (sarcasm) 14 league titles.

Cook sees a dearth of focus, even as Mira Costa has won nine of its first 10 games. “We have breakdowns,” he said. “I think it’s something mental.”

Still, the Mustangs, as Cook puts it, ‘should win a heckuva lot of games.”

And they should also win another Ocean League crown.
