For the first time in four years, Van Nuys Grant has defeated Sunset Six League powerhouse Sun Valley Poly in a baseball game. It happened Monday, with the Lancers prevailing, 10-9, in nine innings at Grant in the league opener.

‘It’s been a long time,’ Grant Coach Devin Ellis said.

Grant won it when Sammy Arce, who went four for four, singled in a run with runners on second and third.

It was Grant’s sixth consecutive victory and improved the Lancers’ record to 7-4 overall. Arce, outfielder Armando Orozco and pitcher Raul Ramirez have been hitting the ball well.

The teams have a rematch Thursday at Poly.
