Garden Grove’s Monsoor embodied a hero’s spirit in life and death

Former Garden Grove football player Michael Monsoor, in the foreground at right, was posthumously awarded the nation’s medal of honor on Tuesday at a ceremony in Washington, D.C.

It came as no surprise to those who knew Monsoor that he smothered a grenade and sacrificed his life for his fellow Navy SEALS while in Iraq.

Among those who remembered him was his football coach at Garden Grove, Kris Van Hook.
