When the tough get going, Monrovia’s Curtis Cowell gets tough.

Cowell, no relation to the ‘American Idol’ judge, pictured, is in what baseball people like to call, ‘The Zone.’ The senior outfielder, who has a batting average of .440 for the season, has safely reached base in nine of his last 10 at bats. To put it in a different way, he has a batting average of .900 over the last three games, all in the Northview tournament.

Wildcats co-head coach Dave Moore says one unique aspect of Cowell’s makeup is that the better the competition, the better his game gets.

Case in point Monday, when Monrovia beat The Times’ No. 9 team, Northview, 6-4, and Cowell went four for four with three runs and an RBI. He also attempted to steal a base, but was caught, a rare occurrence as he was 12 of 14 before being tagged out.

‘He flies. He’s made a tremendous impact [on the team],’ Moore said of Cowell, who also went four for four last week when the Wildcats lost, 12-5, to eventual tournament champion Bonita. ‘He’s the team leader. We are not a whole lot without him.’
