Football: Mater Dei, L.B. Poly headed to Oregon for summer tournament

You’ve got to love the shoe companies for their willingness to spend money for exposure. Nike has decided to sponsor an eight-team summer passing tournament, July 17-18 in Beaverton, Ore., and has invited Mater Dei and Long Beach Poly to represent Southern California.

Nike will pay for transportation and housing for at least 24 players to travel to Oregon, plus coaches. Six other top teams from around the country also will be invited.

Obviously, Mater Dei with All-American quarterback Matt Barkley is a good draw, and Poly, the defending Pac-5 Division champion, could be the No. 1 team in the Southland for 2008.
