It looked as if Angel Cabral‘s streak was safe for another day. Then, whack! Just like that, it was gone.

The Gabrielino pitcher had gone 65 innings without allowing an earned run in Mission Valley League play before Mountain View‘s Brian Villa tripled to drive in two runs in the top of the seventh inning of the Eagles’ 11-2 victory Wednesday in San Gabriel. The streak covered 10 starts and included seven shutouts dating to last April.

Fortunately, Cabral’s ‘hiccup’ didn’t cost him or his team the game as he picked up his sixth win of the season against three losses. In fact, Villa’s hit was the third and last the ace right-hander allowed in an otherwise stellar outing that propelled the Eagles to their 12th victory in the last 13 games.

Being a senior, Cabral won’t play enough games to approach his 65-inning league mark, but you can bet he’ll try to begin a new streak next time he takes the mound.
