No big league starting pitcher has ever gone an entire season with a perfect record -- some have come close. Recently, Greg Maddux, pictured, went 19-2 in 1995 and Rick Sutcliffe was nearly perfect at 16-1 in 1984.

Here, in the South Bay, one kid’s flirting with flawlessness: Kyle Petter, the heat-throwing lefty for West Torrance, won his eighth game yesterday -- to no losses, of course -- while striking out 12 in a 4-0 Bay League win over Peninsula.

Wait a sec, there’s another South Bay kid with a spotless record. Nate Halverson is 7-0 for Palos Verdes, according to MaxPreps.com. Now, that’s the matchup to wish for: Petter vs. Halverson -- perfection against perfection -- and, yes, it could happen. West Torrance (16-3, 2-1) and Palos Verdes (18-3, 3-0) play on April 30, then again on May 2.
