One of the newcomers to the elite level of high school track and field has been the Rancho Verde girls’ team. The Mustangs burst onto the scene last season and culminated their great run by winning the 400 relay at the state championships.

Rancho Verde lost three-quarters of its one-lap relay, pictured, to graduation, but showed again Saturday at the Inland Empire Championships that last season’s team wasn’t simply a one-year wonder.

The Mustangs won the meet-opening one-lap relay in 47.28 seconds, well off their winning time of 45.74 at the state finals, but well within reach, considering there are six weeks until the next state championships at Cerritos College.

At the Arcadia Invitational last week, the Mustangs finished second in 46.66, the second-best mark in the state and third-best in the nation this season and only .34 seconds off their meet record set last season.

Brittany Bozeman, the only returning leg from the state championship one-lap relay team, also won the triple jump at the IE Championships with a clearance of 37 feet, and teammate Alycia Herring won the long jump at 18-8 1/2.
