Eight Southland players were among the 10 players on Cal-Hi Sports All-State girls’ basketball team, led by Jasmine Dixon of Long Beach Poly and Mikah Maly-Karros of Mira Costa, who led their teams to state championship games.

Dixon, of course, led Poly to its third consecutive Division I state title. Maly-Karros helped her team reach the Division II game where it lost to San Jose Mitty.

Other local players named to the team were Layshia Clarendon of Cajon, Courtney Clements of Long Beach Poly, Rebekah Gardner of Ayala, Atonye Nyingifa of Redondo, Nikki Speed of Marlborough and Reiko Thomas of Narbonne.

Five other Southland players made the second team, and six made the third team.

The website also released its all underclass team, and named Clarendon the junior player of the year, and Brea Olinda’s Justine Hartman the freshman player of the year.

Also released was the all-state team by the California Interscholastic Federation’s state divisions.
