Playoff action in Southern Section boys’ lacrosse begins today/Monday with four quarterfinal games in Orange County:

  • No. 8 Avalon (7-2) at No. 1 Foothill (18-2), 4 p.m.
  • No. 5 El Toro (12-5) at No. 4 JSerra (16-4), 7 p.m.
  • No. 6 Santa Margarita (12-7) at No. 3 St. Margaret’s (19-2), 7 p.m.
  • No. 7 Tesoro (13-3) at No. 2 Corona del Mar (15-3), 4:15 p.m.

The semifinals of the Orange County Division playoffs will take place Wednesday, with the championship game Friday at Trabuco Hills at 7 p.m. The Orange County champion will take on the North Division champion on May 9 for the unofficial Southern Section championship.

The Southern Section doesn’t conduct official playoffs for a sport unless 20% of its member schools participate. By my count, 49 of 569 member schools are fielding boys lacrosse teams this season -- or about 9%.

The North Division, which includes Los Angeles and Ventura County schools, is finishing up its regular season early this week. They will have a six-team playoff field, with the third through sixth seeds opening play Saturday and the top two seeds having byes into the May 5 semifinals. The North Division championship will be played May 7 at Mira Costa.
