Lacrosse: I have a new favorite player at Foothill

I don’t want to be confused with Mr. Blackwell, the fashion maven who has compiled Celebrity Worst Dressed Lists for years, but I think it’s safe to say that I’m not alone when I pronounce Foothill’s white uniforms with yellow numbers as terrible, drab, unreadable and uninspired.

What’s the sense of wearing uniforms if you can’t be identified by adoring fans and near-sighted sportswriters? The guys up in the press box doing the timing, scoring and announcing are struggling too, so I know it’s not only me.

Foothill could have yellow on black, black on yellow, black on white or white on black. Instead some company as inspired enough to sell the Knights uniforms, knowing the lack of contrast would necessitate new uniforms in 2009. At least, that’s my theory, because I refuse to believe Coach Jon Fox would look at this color combination and say, ‘Hmmm, that looks good.’

All this fashion talk brings me now to my new favorite player at Foothill -- my only favorite player at Foothill? -- because I can identify him from the press box. Eddie Dainko, a junior who wears DayGlo orange shoes, is The Man because I could identify him from the moon. If he scores the winning goal tonight, you’ll know about it. If somebody else scores the winning goal -- and I’m not sure it hasn’t already been scored -- it will come from someone wearing a bad uniform with just another pair of shoes.

At halftime, Foothill holds an 8-2 lead over St. Margaret’s. Riley Hales has four goals and John Dudridge has three. Trent Jones has three assists. And Eddie Danko has my respect and attention.
